The Mayoral Election In Palawan Ended Up In A Tie And To Be Decided By Draw Lots
MAYORAL ELECTION – In Araceli, Palawan, the decision for the Mayoral election would be by draw lots after the formal election ended up with a tie.
The nationwide election was held last Monday (May 13, 2019). With this, local elections for mayoral positions were also conducted and results came back quickly.
Here’s a recent update of the senatorial race, partial and official from the Comelec.
As most of the mayoral positions have already been concluded in several areas, Sue Cudilla of ‘Partido Pagbabago ng Palawan’ and Noel Beronio of PDP-Laban still had to settle their election with draw lots.
This was after the results of the 2019 elections for the mayoral position in their area ended up with a tie. Comelec released election returns from the election transparency server showing each of the candidates running for mayor got 3,495 votes.
It was stated in the Omnibus Election Code that members of the local board of canvassers should conduct a meeting in public where the board of canvassers should go on with the drawing of lots for the tied candidates. This should be held after the recording candidates were confirmed tied.
This is according to an article from GMA News.
The resolution also explains the process further, written:
“The local board of canvassers should proclaim as elected the candidates who may be favored by luck, and the candidates so proclaimed should have the right to assume office in the same manner as if he had been elected by plurality of vote.”
The law’s provision, however, does not cover the candidates right to protest against the negative result that may come with the raffle.
A bizarre turn of events indeed for the local election in Palawan. This time, luck will decide the candidates’ fates.
That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
