Bhutan Prime Minister is a Doctor Every Saturday
PRIME MINISTER – Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering spends his weekends at the hospital.
Lotay Tshering is the current Prime Minister of Bhutan. Before he became a politician, he served as consultant surgeon and urologist.
The 51-year-old politician’s wife is also a doctor. They have one daughter and two adopted children.
Based on a report from Philstar, the Prime Minister trained in the United States, Australia, Japan, and Bangladesh before he began his career in politics.
Now, Lotay Tshering spends his Saturdays treating patients at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital.
According to the report, the Prime Minister said working in the hospital every Saturday relieves his stress at the office. His family time is every Sundays.
“For me it’s a de-stresser,” said Tshering.
The doctor-turned-politician is famous for measuring his people’s Gross National Happiness.
“Some people play golf, some do archery, and I like to operate. I am just spending my weekends here,” he added.
On the office of Lotay Tshering, he puts his lab coats on the back of his chair as a reminder to focus on the people’s healthcare.
He said the life expectancy in their country has improved. However, they are also considering some issues regarding secondary and tertiary healthcare.
“We must now slowly put more focus on secondary and tertiary healthcare,” said Tshering.
Based on a report, the Lotay Tshering explained why a doctor is just the same as being a politician.
“At the hospital, I scan and treat patients. In the government, I scan the health of policies and try to make them better.”
“I will continue doing this until I die and I miss not being able to be here every day,” he added.
