The state seismology agency Phivolcs is currently monitoring the possible occurrence of the Magnitude 8 earthquake following the quake in Surigao del Norte.
Last week, a series of earthquakes hit different parts of the country with different magnitudes and intensities causing devastation and multiple deaths.
The latest tremor has been found last Friday (April 26, 2019) in General Luna, Surigao Del Norte with a magnitude of 5.5.
Recently, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced that the occurrence of a magnitude 8 earthquake is possible after series of tremors hit the country.
PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum explained that the segment offshore in Surigao provinces could possibly generate a moderate to magnitude 8 earthquake.
“Ang sinabi namin ang pagdating sa mga trenches, ‘yung segment offshore ng Surigao provinces ay may kakayahan magdulot ng magnitude 8 na earthquake. Matagal na po naming sinasabi yan, However, it is also possible that only “moderate” earthquakes will take place,” Solidum said.
However, Solidum explained that they could not determine the exact location and time when will earthquakes occur.
Solidum also advised the citizens residing in the eastern section of the country to take precautionary measures.
