Negros Fault Lines Now Being Monitored After Samar Quake
The Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) is now monitoring the Negros Fault Lines following the magnitude 6.5 quake in Samar.
On Tuesday afternoon (April 23, 2019), Eastern Samar has been struck by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake damaging establishments and buildings.
The powerful tremor was felt in the nearby provinces of Samar such as Leyte, Bacolod, Masbate, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Surigao del Sur, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Cebu.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the cities of Bacolod and Bago felt an intensity 2 earthquake.
The cities of Cadiz and Silay, and Pontevedra town have also felt the quake.
PDMPD head Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian said that the authorities are now monitoring the Negros Trench, which is considered dangerous as movements are under the ocean.
The authorities are closely taking a look at the East Negros Fault System including San Carlos Fault covering Calatrava in Negros Occidental and some areas in Negros Oriental after the quake in Samar.
The agency is also keeping an eye on West Negros Fault, Central Negros Fault, and Southern Negros Fault.
Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office cluster head Jose Marie Vargas said that about 30 percent of establishments in the downtown area can’t withstand strong quakes.
