PHIVOLCS Assures Magnitude 6.1 Won’t Trigger More Quakes

PHIVOLCS Assures Luzon Earthquake Won’t Trigger More Quakes Coming From West Valley Fault

PHIVOLCS – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) assured the people that the earthquake yesterday won’t trigger the West Valley Fault.

The agency recorded a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Luzon yesterday April 22, 2019.

In a previous article, PHIVOLCS recorded 406 aftershocks after it struck the region. They also predicted that the ‘big one’ could happen anytime soon.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) confirmed the death of 7 persons and 81 injured people.

Most of the victims were trapped inside a grocery store in Pampanga. In a previous article, the family on some of the victims calls for an investigation of the grocery store.

The grieving family questioned why it’s the only establishment that was destroyed during the earthquake.

On the other hand, PHIVOLCS assured the people in Luzon that the strong earthquake yesterday could not cause more quakes in the future.

Based on a report from CNN, the director of the agency stated that the shake could not affect the West Valley Fault.

“The earthquake yesterday would not trigger the movement of the West Valley Fault, it’s so small.”

“But the West Valley Fault can move because it is independent of the fault that moved yesterday to cause the Magnitude 6.1 earthquake,” he added.

According to the report, officials were worried about a possible earthquake with 7.1 magnitudes coming from the West Valley Fault.

The said fault is a 100-kilometer distance passing through Metro Manila down to Laguna.

Based on the report, PHIVOLCS stated that people should be prepared for the worst because they won’t be able to predict the quakes.

“The Phivolcs-DOST is not giving a warning for an impending earthquake. We are using a scenario for all of us to prepare for because otherwise, we don’t have an idea how serious the preparedness should be.”

“So we are not warning, but there is a possibility that there is a strong earthquake,” Solidum said
