Sugar Workers Oppose the Sugar Import Liberalization
SUGAR IMPORT LIBERALIZATION – The sugar workers in the Philippines expressed their opposition in the proposed liberalization of sugar import in the country.
One of the products that is really a necessity in any country is the sugar. In the Philippines, the people rely on the sugar produced from the field. A huge part of the populace is composed of sugar workers.
However, like in other fields, there are also problems in the sugar industry. In line with it, the proposal to allow the importation of the product crossed the surface. It gained different reactions.
On the part of the sugar workers, they are clearly in the opposition side when it comes to the proposed sugar import liberalization.
In fact, as a way to express their opposition towards the sugar import liberalization, the sugar workers’ camp recently released a “Karga-Tapas manifesto”.
In the said manifesto, the sugar workers poured out their side and sentiment on the proposal. The Visayan Daily Star has obtained a copy of it and posted it on Facebook.
About their opposition towards the sugar import liberalization, the sugar workers stated that “it will obliterate” the local sugar industry which may result to “economic dislocation” of the farmers and poverty.
In the released manifesto, the sugar workers also stressed the sacrifices done by the farmers for the survival of the sugar industry. It also encourages the public to know the value of the industry.
