Cleanup Operation in Manila Bay Gathers More Than 5 Tons of Garbage

MANILA BAY – More than 5 tons of garbage were gathered during the cleanup operation in Manila Bay.

Philippine President Rodrigo Durterte approved the 7-year rehabilitation Manila Bay with an initial budget of 47 billion pesos. The project was proposed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Following a previous article, the DENR has planned to relocate the thousands of informal settlers when the rehabilitation starts.

Based on a report from Philstar, they started cleaning up the waterways Centra Luzon’s Manila Bay to minimize the toxic discharge and fecal coliforms in the water.

After cleaning that area, they will immediately implement the solid waste management. “Notices of violation will be issued to non-compliant establishments,” said Paquito Moreno.

DENR recorded 9,363 informal settlers in Pampanga while 23,000 in Bulacan. 10,166 of them resided at the coastal areas or rivers in Pampanga, Bataan, and Bulacan.

Central Luzon Environmental Management Bureau director Lormely Claudio stated that 47 establishments were given notices and cease and desist orders in Bataan and Bulacan.

According to the report, sixteen of these establishments are from Meycauayan, Bulacan. 24 in Obando and three in Marilao, Bulacan while four building in Mariveles, Bataan.

The director said these establishments were jewelry and leather industries in Marilao, beach resort and fishpens in Obando, manufacturing firms and hotels in Mariveles Bataan. All of them were being observed for submission of the requirement of DENR.

Based on the report, the cleanup of Manila Bay in Bataan and Bulacan, Pampanga last Sunday gathered five tons of waste.

DENR Central Luzon Director Paquito Moreno stated they planted 3,000 mangrove saplings in the rivers. It was planted in Barangay Tawiran, Obando, Bulacan; Lucanin, Mariveles, Bataan, and Sto. Filomena, Guagua, Pampanga.
