Balangiga Bells on their way for Historic Homecoming in the Philippines
BALANGIGA BELLS – The Balangiga bells are now bound for its historic homecoming in Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.
The three historical Balangiga bells in the Philippines had a stopover and reunited once again at the Okinawa, Japan.
Those bells were from the San Lorenzo de Martin Church in Samar which was taken by the Americans as trophies during the Philippine-American war in 1901.
President Duterte made a promise during his State of the Nation Address in 2017. Duterte said he will return those bells back in the country from the US Wyoming Airbase and South Korea.
Based on a report from Philstar, Duterte is the only president who is successful in retrieving the three bells from the possession of the Americans.
Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said that the return of the bells just shows the friendship and alliance of the country and the United States.
“The Palace enthusiastically awaits the arrival of the Balangiga bells to the country on Tuesday”
“We thank them for this gesture that would formally put closure to a tragic and contentious episode in both our countries’ history,” he added.
According to the report, the Balangiga bells will be hand over at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City. The handover rites will be attended by the Philippine security officials, US Ambassador Sung Kim, and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
Lorenzana said the bells are expected to arrive before noon and he’ll be the one who will sign the documents that certify they already got the bells from the US.
