500-Kg Leatherback Turtle Caught In Camarines Sur
A 500-kilogram leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coricea) caught by the fisherman’s net at Balatan town in the province of Camarines Sur.
On Thursday (November 22, 2018), the fisherfolks of Balatan town in Camarines Sur accidentally caught a 500-kilogram leatherback turtle.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) included the “Dermochelys coricea” on their red list, which is considered as “vulnerable” species.
Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Bicol spokesperson Nonie Enolva said that the turtle has been accidentally entangled in the net of Alberto Pasamba, a fisherman.
The huge turtle with a length of 1.75 meters is a female and it was the second creature stranded dead turtle in Balatan this year.
The veterinarians said that the dead stranded turtle died due to starvation and swallowing plastics, according to veterinarians.
“Balatan (can be) considered a hotspot area for marine turtles due to the preponderance of sightings and strandings,” Enolva.
The residents of Camarines Sur are watching the turtle until the personnel of Iriga City environment and natural resources office arrive to check the turtle’s health.
