Papua New Guinea Struck By Magnitude 7 Earthquake

A magnitude 7 earthquake jolts Papua New Guinea striking the island of New Britain causing fear and panic among the residents.

On Thursday (October 11, 2018), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a powerful tremor struck the part of New Britain, 118 kilometers from Kimbe.

The quake’s epicenter was located at 200 kilometers south-west of the town of Rabaul with a depth of 40 kilometers.

“We felt the earthquake a bit, but it was not too strong,” Constable Roy Michael said via phone from Rabaul police station.

Michael said that there was no damage recorded in the town because of the strong tremor but experience at least two aftershocks with a magnitude greater than 5.

USGS initially recorded the tremor with a 7.3 magnitude but reduced to 7 after a few moments.

Waves with less than 30 cm high are also expected along the coastal areas of Papua New Guinea and Solomon Island, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

David Walsh, an oceanographer at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that any possible tsunami would only affect the areas around the quake’s epicenter.
