Sulawesi Island, Indonesia Struck By Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake has struck Sulawesi Island in Indonesia, according to the report of US Geological Survey (USGS).

On Friday evening (September 28, 2018), a powerful earthquake hits Indonesia damaging numerous houses and injured some residents.

USGS said that the strong tremor struck the region around 6:02 pm on Friday followed by several aftershocks.

The quake’s epicenter was located at 35 miles northeast of Donggala with a depth of 10 kilometers.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purow Nugroho said that the quake-affected area experienced a widespread damage and communications were disrupted.

“Our early estimation, based on experience, is that it caused widespread damage, beginning from Palu northward to Donggala,” Nugroho said.

At least one person has been reportedly died due to the quake.

The powerful quake also triggered a tsunami sweeping numerous houses in two cities; Palu and Donggala.

2-meter waves have swept through Palu on Sulawesi island right after the authorities raised the tsunami warning in the area.

“The situation is chaotic, people are running on the streets and buildings collapsed. There is a ship washed ashore,” Dwikorita Karnawati, head of Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency, BMKG said quoted by BBC.
