Daniel Matsunaga Doctorate Degree Invalid, CHED Announces

CHED announced that Daniel Matsunaga Doctorate Degree is invalid.

DANIEL MATSUNAGA DOCTORATE DEGREE – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) invalidated the doctoral degree received by Daniel Matsunaga.

The Brazilian-Japanese actor Daniel Matsunaga has recently received an honorary doctoral degree from Brethren Evangelical School of Theology (BEST).

Matsunaga is now conferred with a Ph.D. in Humanities, major in Social Work.

“I am very honored to be the recipient of such an amazing award. I just want to thank God for everything He has done in my life…also to the executives for believing and trusting me with such a big award,” he wrote in an Instagram account.

According to LADC, “honorary doctoral degree is often awarded in recognition of one’s life experiences denoted by the letters ‘h.c.’, which is an abbreviation for ‘honoris causa’ (Latin for ‘for the sake of honor’)”.

And BEST has these criteria to have such a degree: 1) proven character; 2) length of services rendered at least 10 years and above; 3) life experienced in line with expertise; 4) life achievements in the field of practice of expertise; and 5) nominated by credible individual that knows you well.

However, in a recent report from GMA, the Commission on Higher Education stated that BEST is an institution which did not issue a permit to operate.

Therefore, the degree cannot be granted as per the statement of CHED Officer-in-Charge and spokesperson J. Prospero de Vera III.

Moreover, it is not recognized as a higher education institution (HEI).

BEST also violated the policies and guidelines as set by CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) No. 19, series of 2014, or the “Enhanced Policies and Guidelines on the Conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degrees by HEIs.”

The honorary doctorate degrees can be granted by HEIs that have existed for at least 25 years which “possess a well-acknowledged academic reputation, institutional values, and mission, among others”.

Thus, CHED will not recognize the degree awarded by BEST, thus, sanctions will be imposed.
