Government Prepares ₱1.7B Worth Of Goods As Typhoon Ompong Draws Near Philippine Area Of Responsibility

TYPHOON OMPONG – The Department of Social Welfare and Development prepared  ₱1.7B Worth Of Goods in preparation for typhoon Ompong.

Based on the report, Ompong, internationaly known as Mangkhut, is fast approaching the country and will be entering PAR soon.

PAGASA expects Ompong to become a supertyphoon and has sustained winds reaching up to 220 kilometers per hour. As of now, it has maximum sustained winds of 203 kph and gustiness of up to 250 kph, based on  the United States Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

The Cagayan Valley Region will be placed under cyclone warning signal this Thursday (September 11), according to Chris Perez, PAGASA weather specialist.

That being said, on Wednesday night, DSWD is currently preparing for the worst, placing ₱1.7 billion worth of standby fund, food and non-food items on standby.

A report from GMA News says that this is due to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center raising the alert status to blue on Monday 5pm. The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster also discussed preparations and made sure that communication lines are open during the storm.

The military, police, firefighters and coastguard, on the other hand, are on standby for deployment if ever the need arises.

Elsewhere, residents residing in predicted affected areas are advised to prepare early and heed calls for preemptive evacuation. For tourists, otherwise, they are encouraged to suspend activities such as surfing, caving, and mountaineering until the weather disturbance ends.

As per the report, PAGASA will be presenting a Storm Surge Analysis to enable concerned areas to prepare against possible storm surge attacks via a pre-disaster risk (–foul word(s) removed–)sment meeting on Wednesday (September 12). The government has called on the public to share reliable and credible information based on the PAGASA’s latest updates.
