Closure of NAIA Runway Affects Several Flights Today, August 17

NAIA RUNWAY – A Manila International Airport Authority official gave an update on the closure of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport runway.

Close to thirty flights are canceled today because of the runway closure at NAIA. It happened after a hard landing of Xiamen Air flight MF 8667 which went off the runway before midnight.

According to ABS-CBN News, the heavy rains affected the landing of the plane carrying 157 passengers and 8 crews. It is from Xiamen to Manila. Everyone who boarded the Chinese passenger plane is safe.

The closure of NAIA runway 06/24 of NAIA has affected several international and local flights. There are also diverted flights that were affected.

Based on the report, MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal expressed that they are thinking of extending the closure. It might be until 4:00 p.m.

“Depending on the progress of the recovery. Hopefully, we will be able to remove the aircraft in due time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Monreal stressed that they are trying their best to remove the plane as lots of flights are affected.

According to CAAP Director General Jim Sydiongco, the runway will supposedly be opened at 12: oo noon. However, the authorities decided to extend to give more time for the removal of the plane.

“We have an aircraft investigation team on the site since midnight and ongoing siya ngayon,” Sydiongco expressed.

Based on the report, passengers of the affected flights due to the NAIA runway closure are advised to coordinate with their airlines.
