This rainy season, leptospirosis is one of the most common bacterial infections affecting the health of the Filipinos.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by contact with rodent urine through wounds in contact with flood waters, vegetation, moist soil contaminated with the urine of rats.
This infection is caused by “leptospira bacteria” wherein several symptoms such as headaches, muscle pains, and fever might occur.
Redness of the eyes might also occur in some case, but severe infection might lead to kidney failure, bleeding, yellowish body discoloration, and other diseases.
Consult a medical expert for treatment during early recognition within two days of disease to avoid further complications.
Effective antibiotics including penicillin G, amoxicillin, ampicillin, and doxycycline can be used in treating this bacterial infection.
Here are some steps on how to prevent leptospirosis:
- Avoid immersing in potentially contaminated water.
- Control rats and pests at home by using poison or traps and maintaining cleanliness at home.
- Use proper protection such as boots and gloves when wading to flood or contaminated water.
- Drain potentially contaminated water.
The Department of Health (DOH), as of June 9, 2018, about 99 people died due to leptospirosis out of 1, 030 cases this year.
