Duterte Approves PH Mental Health Law; Angara Renews Call To PhilHealth

Philippine Mental Health Law Signed by Pres. Duterte

DUTERTE – Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has signed the Republic Act No. 11036 or the Philippine Mental Health Law.

Pres. Duterte has already approved lots of bills for the welfare of the Filipino people. Based on a report, one of those bills that he has previously approved features the free tuition fee for the students in state colleges and universities.

Recently, the 73-year-old President has signed another bill that would benefit the Filipino people – the Philippine Mental Health Law or the R.A. No. 11036. Senator Risa Hontiveros is the principal sponsor of the bill.

Based on a recent report in Rappler, aside from the female Senator, other authors of the Philippine Mental Health Law are Senate President Vicente ‘Tito’ Sotto III and senators Antonio Trillanes IV, Juan Edgardo Angara, Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Joel Villanueva, and Loren Legarda.

Proposed Death Penalty Bill

Based on the report, Sen. Risa Hontiveros praised Pres. Rodrigo Duterte for approving the Philippine Mental Health Law. According to the female senator, the law would “set the path” for the policy of the government in including the mental healthcare in the public healthcare system of the Philippines.

“Help is finally here. The Mental Health Law cements the government’s commitment to a more holistic approach to healthcare,” Sen. Hontiveros expressed.

According to the report, through a statement, Sen. Angara renewed his call to Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) for the expansion of the coverage of the benefits and include mental healthcare.

“We renew our call to PhilHealth to cover fees for psychiatric consultations and medicines, as early as intervention and prevention,” he stated.

Furthermore, Sen. Sonny Angara expressed their hope that making free psychiatric consultations and medicines available for the Filipino people will be included in the drafting of the IRR.
