Supreme Court Fired Sereno, UP Carillon Bells Loudly Ring Again
The Carillon bells at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus loudly ring again after the Supreme Court (SC) fires Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
On Friday (May 11, 2018), the bells at the top of UP Carillon Tower are heard again playing “Bayan Ko” to condemn the decision of SC to dismiss Sereno as the chief justice.
SC’s decision to boot out Sereno came despite the warning that impeaching officials would be an overstepping of the power of Congress.
The University of the Philippines Diliman campus rings the Carillon bell for an hour as a response to the Court’s decision.
In September 2017, the Carillon bells also played the same patriotic tune after the Court ruled in favor of President Duterte’s order to bury the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at “Libingan ng mga Bayani.”
In 1950, the Carillon tower has been erected based on the design of the National Artist for Architecture Juan Nakpil.
Eventually, the age-old tower becomes one of the landmarks where the university has been known.
