Catholic Priest Shot Dead During Mass In Cagayan

A Catholic priest identified as Fr. Mark Anthony Ventura was shot dead during a Sunday morning mass in Gattaran town, Cagayan province.

The authorities reported that Fr. Mark Anthony Ventura has been gunned down at the Barangay Piña Weste gymnasium on the outskirts of Gattaran while talking with his choir members.

Two men riding tandem on a motorcycle suddenly arrived and one of them walked toward the group and shot the priest.

Senior Supt. Warren Tolito, Cagayan police director said that the suspects fled toward Baggao town.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) was condemning the killing of the priest in Cagayan Town and seeking justice for his untimely death.

“We condemn this evil act. We . . . appeal to the authorities to act swiftly [and go] after the perpetrators of this crime and bring them to justice,” CBCP president Archbishop Romulo Valles said quoted by Inquirer.

Ventura was known for helping the indigenous people and opposing the mining in Cagayan town.

Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba, Ventura’s godfather said that Ventura’s family and relatives were clueless on the motive of the gunmen.

Ventura who had been already a priest for seven years was the second Catholic priest to be murdered in Luzon in five months.
