Roque Says State Of Calamity Declaration For Boracay Expected This Week

Presidential Secretary Harry Roque said that a state of calamity the Boracay Island was expected to be declared this week.

On Tuesday (April 17, 2018), Roque confirmed that the declaration of state of calamity in Boracay is already at works.

The proclamation would serve as the legal basis for the release of about P2.3 billion calamity fund for the informal workers affected by the closure of the island, according to Roque.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) had already submitted its recommendation for declaring Boracay under the state of calamity to the Office of the President.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has begun to profiling the workers on the island, according to Frederick Alegre, the assistant secretary of Department of Tourism.

The profiling of workers in Boracay was expected by DOLE to be finished by April 23, 2018.

Department of the Interior and Local Government Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing III explained that the government has a sufficient amount of funds to provide support for the workers affected by the Boracay closure.

Densing also said Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and DOLE already have livelihood programs for the affected workers.

The executive order declaring the closure of country’s top tourist spot was expected to be release this week, aside from the proclamation of the state of calamity.
