Quake Strikes Areas in Davao Oriental

DAVAO ORIENTAL – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that an earthquake struck some areas in Davao Oriental today.

Based on a recent report in ABS-CBN News, citing Phivolcs, the earthquake struck at around 11:53 in the morning and it jolted the town of Tarragona.

Initially, the Phivolcs reported that the quake is at 5.5 magnitude. It was later on upgraded to 6.0 magnitude. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 31 kilometers southeast of Tarragona.

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Davao Oriental was felt in Mati City, Davao City, and Cagayan de Oro City.

According to the report, Mati City felt the shaking at Intensity 4 which is “generally felt by most people indoors and outdoors. Many sleeping people are awakened. Some are frightened, some run outdoors”.

In Davao and Cagayan de Oro cities, Intensity 3 which reportedly causes vibrations that can make objects that are hanging move was felt.

With regards to the effects of the quake, disaster officer Charlemagne Bagasol reportedly expressed that there are no reports of damage caused by the quake in Mati City.
