Boracay To Close For 6 Months Starting April 26, Local Airlines Canceled Flights

Malacañang Palace said that Boracay Island will be closed for six months starting April 26, 2018, to allow the government to rehabilitate to country’s top tourist spot.

On Tuesday (April 04, 2018), Presidential spokesman Harry Roque announced that the world-famous tourist destination ‘Boracay’ will be temporarily closed for six months starting April 26.

President Duterte has already approved Boracay’s six-month closure during the Cabinet meeting in the Palace, according to Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra.

In February, the president called the country’s top tourist spot a cesspool and lacking proper sewerage system, which was negatively affecting the environment.

Mr. Duterte has also threatened to close the island and file charges against the people responsible for its deterioration.

The government has also issued warning notices to over 100 business establishments in Boracay Island for allegedly violating easement policies.

Environment Undersecretary Jonas Leones said that administrative and criminal charges – including graft and corruption might be filed against several government officials involved in irregularities.

The Department of Labor and Employment will also provide around 5, 000 jobs for the aid workers in Boracay affected by the closure.

While the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will conduct training seminars.

Local airlines have also canceled the flights to and from Caticlan and Kalibo towns in Aklan due to Boracay closure.

PAL suspended the flights Manila to the two municipalities starting April 20 to October 27, while flights to Caticlan from Cebu and Clark will be suspended from April 26 to October 27.
