Newly Found Plant Species Named After Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte
A newly found plant species in the Province of Dinagat Island was named after the Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte Carpio.
The new species of wax plant from a Kamagong tree has been discovered by a team of biodiversity experts from the University of Mindanao.
The experts discovered a beautiful flower with a purple and light pink color at the tip of its apex measuring about 1.4 cm.
The new species of Hoya wax plant was found near a mining area on April 23, 2017, and named it “Hoya Indaysarae”, according to Milton Norman Medina, Director of Biodiversity and Environment Institute of the University of Mindanao.
The director explained that the newly discovered plant was named after Inday Sara because of her environmental advocacies and nature conservation programs over the region of Davao.
Hoya is a genus of 200-300 species of tropical climbing plants of waxplant, wax vine, waxflower or simply hoya with a scientific name of Apocynaceae (Dogbane).
The newly discovered plant genus is mostly found in Southern Asia and Australia.
UM Research Team introduced the newly found plant during a press conference and gifted Inday Sara Duterte with a sample of Hoya Indaysarae.
Inday Sara wasn’t able to attend the event but give a message to the Davao-lead research brought honor to the city.
“I am confident that we can look forward to more exciting discoveries in the years to come,” Duterte said quoted by Summit Express.
