Lea Salonga comments on the lowering English skills of Pinoys.
LEA SALONGA – The Broadway Diva Lea Salonga comments something on the deteriorating English Proficiency of the Pinoys.
Lea Salonga is famous internationally because of her commendable performances in her Tony Award-winning role in Miss Saigon.
Additional to that, she has also received Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World Awards.
Her achievements included being the first Asian to play Eponine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway and returned to the show as Fantine in its revival in 2006.
Lately, on her post on Instagram, she shared, “Okay, scapegoaters, who are we pointing fingers at for this one? The media? Educational institutions? I honestly don’t have an answer.”
She is referring to the report she re-tweeted from The Philippine Star which indicated on the title, “Filipino graduates’ English skills lower than target for cab drivers in Dubai, study says.”
Accordingly to the report, the “English proficiency level of college graduates in the Philippines is lower than the proficiency target set for high school students in Thailand and the competency requirement for taxi drivers in Dubai.”
This was based and showed in a two-year study preliminary result.
“So is the report totally off the mark? Or might there be some truth to it? I’d like to believe that @PhilstarNews is a reliable source for news. Perhaps a perspective like yours would be helpful to round out the numbers. Thank you,” she further commented.
And on the other hand, a netizen has stated and reacted as well on the reaction of the singer with regards to the matter, “I am an OFW here in Dubai, and I would say that the report is so demeaning to even compare the result to target for Dubai cab drivers. ACTUAL is most often DIFFERENT from TARGET. And in reality, it is difficult to coverse with cabbies in straight English.”
