Joan Pabona’s Entry National Geographic Photo Contest Chosen
JOAN PABONA – Domestic helper in Hong Kong identified as Joan Pabona won second place in the photo contest of National Geographic and Wheelock Properties.
The height with regards to where a passion can take you can’t indeed be given limits. Overseas Filipino worker Joan Pabona who impressed the National Geographic with the product of her passion for photography is a great example for that.
We learned from Kami that Joan is a domestic helper in Hong Kong. She joined the “People & Happenings in Hong Kong” category of the National Geographic Wheelock Youth Photo Competition which is open to photo enthusiasts aging between 16 to 40 years old.
Based on the report, Joan Pabona titled her entry Sacrifice. Her black and white photo shows a construction worker in the middle of safety nets. She won more than PHP 42,000 because of it.
Citing her interview with Esquire, the report stated that Joan Pabona’s entry in the National Geographic photo contest was taken when she was cleaning on the eight floor of a building she is working in.
According to the photo enthusiast, she chose the said photo to be her entry in the contest as it is “very artistic” and it is a powerful photo. She feels honored that her entry is one of those which won among the 3,518 photos in the contest.
“Hong Kongers are very hardworking, versatile, and resilient – and as I observe every day, I can say that they are the engine of the city,” Joan said.
Based on the report, she was in college when Joan Pabona started in photography. It was her hobby and she took it with her even when she went to Hong Kong to work. According to her, photography became her stress reliever and she usually takes photos during her day off.
