Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake Hits Taiwan Killing Two People & Over 200 Others Injured

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake has struck the east coast of Taiwan killing at least two people and injuring more than 200 others.

On Tuesday (February 06, 2018), the US Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 6.4 tremor was centered in the East China Sea about 21 kilometers north-northeast of Hualien City. The report also said that Taipei felt a light tremor about 120 kilometers north of Hualien City.

In Hualien City, three buildings have collapsed including the Marshall Hotel. The two establishments damaged by the powerful tremor were described as city department buildings, according to Jeff Lin together with Hualien Police Department.

Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake

About 400 rescuers arrived and even used a crane to help in locating the victims from the building, which apparently collapsed. A Hualien City police dispatcher said that about 50 Japanese tourists got injured.

USGS reported that a magnitude 5.4 aftershock was felt near Hualien City. Several strong quakes have been also recorded in the area over the last few days before the major earthquake.

Hsu Kuo-Yung, the spokesperson for the Taiwanese government said that the flight to the Hualien area has been suspended.

The Taiwanese spokesperson said that the railways have been damaged prompting the cancellation of flights but the railway department did not give further details and information.
