Possible Lahar, Mudflow From Mayon Volcano Warned By NDRRMC

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has warned of possible lahar and mudflow from the Mayon Volcano.

Possible mudflow and lahar are already expected to flow from Mayon Volcano due to the downpour in Bicol Region.

Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Management Center (PDRRMC) is already under red alert while the province after a state of calamity has been declared in the province, according to NDRRMC spokesperson Romina Marasigan.

The cl(–foul word(s) removed–) throughout the province have been also canceled due to the irregularities detected in Mayon Volcano.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded over 143 lava collapse events and a major tremor event.

The lava collapse includes falling rocks with lava flowing down on volcano’s slopes particularly in Miisi, Matanag, and Buyuan Gullies inside the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).

The activity is also accompanied by the emission of ashes to the south-west part of the volcano. The volcano has already threw about 3, 293 tons of sulfur.

Mayon Volcano is currently under Alert Level 3 indicating a possible explosion within the weeks or even days.

Phivolcs also warned the public from entering 6 kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and 7 km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) in the southern part of the volcano due to hazardous volcanic flows.

The volcanology agency also prohibits aircraft to fly near the volcano’s summit due to dangerous volcano eruptions.

Mt. Mayon’s irregularities affects 38, 939 residents or 9, 480 families from 36 villages in Albay including the municipalities of Camalig, Guinobatan, Malilipot, Daraga, Sto. Domingo and cities of Legazpi, Ligao, and Tabaco.
