Fashion Icon Jose Pitoy Moreno Passes Away At Age 92

Philippine fashion designer Jose Pitoy Moreno dies at 92.

JOSE PITOY MORENO – The Philippine fashion icon and designer Jose Pitoy Moreno dies at the age of 92 at 2:48 p.m. Monday.

At 92 years old, the famed fashion designer Pitoy Moreno has been confirmed to have already passed away due to cardiac arrest at 2:48 p.m. Monday, January 15.

Moreno is tagged as the Fashion Czar of Asia and considered as “one of the country’s top designers” as he is known for his works popularizing the Maria Clara gowns which was worn by first ladies, heads of states, and even European royalty.

His creations have also been featured in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

He also got the credits of introducing piña, jusi, and hablon to global audiences.

He was included in the controversial batch of nominees for the National Artist Award in 2009, alongside film marker Carlo J. Caparas, Francisco ‘Bobby’ Mañosa, and Cecile Guidote Alvarez.

He was hospitalized for pneumonia in 2014 and he accordingly  “flatlined, but since his nurse had brought him to the hospital immediately, he was revived in the nick of time.”

His works were last showcased in 2011 when he was honored in a charity fashion gala where 100 pieces of his work—including Philippine costumes, couture gowns, 19th century-inspired pañuelo-draped Maria Claras, and ternos—were shown for a fundraising for the Lopez Group Foundation’s (LGFI) assisted community programs and projects.

As per a report from Preview, “Pitoy Moreno will always be recognized as a legend by the Philippine fashion industry for his work in championing the traditional Filipiniana and Philippine fashion design across the globe.”
