Pinay Nurse Geneveve Zapeda With ‘Palengke’ Wit Now At Top Of Ventura Public Health
The Pinay nurse Geneveve Zapeda who has a ‘Palengke’ wit now rises at the top of the Ventura California public health.
Geneveve Zapeda always uses her ‘Quiapo’ smart she learned from growing up in a market towards stalkers and racists.
The Zapeda family owns a garment stall at San Jose Public Market in Mindoro, so they frequently go to marketplaces in Quiapo, Divisoria, and Baclaran to buy goods.
The Filipina nurse uses her Palengke smart in dealing with different kinds of people leading her to become the third Filipino to secure one of the top positions in the healthcare system in Ventura County in California.
At first, Zapeda was dreaming to be a chemical engineer aiming to create a soap that can be used by ordinary Filipino people.
However, her father wants her to be a nurse so she could go to the United States and the white uniform of the medical personnel convinced her to take nursing.
Geneveve finished her nursing at the Far Eastern University in 1997 and passed the board examination.
Zapeda had worked for Philippine General Hospital as a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) nurse and other hospitals in the country. She also realized that having 10 to 15 patients a day results in malpractice and negligence.
In 2003, the Pinay nurse has decided to work abroad and hired in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) in Texas. In 2005, she moved from Texas to California after her papers were approved.
The medical personnel had two to three jobs to have a car after passing the driver’s license test while having only two uniforms, which she washed every other day.
She even worked as PACU nurse at the Ventura County Hospital while working at the SNF sleeping in her car after the night shift and proceeding to her morning duty.
Due to her hard work, Zapeda receives Public Health Nurse and American Case Management certifications and a master’s in Public Health Administration.
The nurse had Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training in leadership skills and shared that emotional quotient is important.
“I was in LA for a two-day conference. I was the only Filipino. An Italian national told me that nurses from the Philippines are boastful of their US working visa, and other comments. During that conference I showed them my worth–intellect, professionalism and leadership style,” Zapeda said quoted by Inquirer.
In 2013, Geneveve worked as the manager of Utilization Management and Social Services of Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC).
Zapeda said they aim to improve the medication safety and management of patients suffering from chronic diseases and provide an affordable medication for patients before being discharged.
