Supermoons, Meteor Shower This January 2018

Here are some of the astronomical events including two supermoons and a meteor shower that will occur this month of January 2018.

Most of the Filipino love stargazing and watching astronomical events, which only occurs rarely in a lifetime.

Good news for stargazers! there will be two supermoons and a meteor shows to a lunar eclipse this first month of 2018, so they must prepare their telescopes for this events.

January 2018

  • January 2, 2018 – Supermoon

The Space Sciences and Astronomy Section of Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that the first supermoon of the month has seen around 10:24 am last Tuesday.

  • January 3-4, 2018 – Quadrantid Meteor Shower

PAGASA said that at least 40 meteor showers per hour could be seen during those dates.

  • January 15, 2018 – Moon Apogee

This event will show the farthest distance of the moon from the earth at the distance of about 406, 423 kilometers away from the planet.

  • January 30, 2018 – Supermoon

PAGASA said that the second supermoon of the month could be seen around 5:54 pm on this date.

  • January 31, 2018 – Lunar Eclipse, Blue Moon

The lunar eclipse would be visible at 6:49 pm and would end around 12:09 am on February 01, 2018.

A second full moon or known as blue moon could be also seen aside from the lunar eclipse. However, the volcanology agency explained that viewers not to expect a blue color of the moon.
