Joemell Lorayna, 12-Year-Old Teacher Uses Raft Just To Teach Uneducated Kids

A 12-year-old teacher named Joemell Lorayna uses a raft just to teach uneducated children who don’t even know how to read.

The Philippine Statistics Authority said that one out of 10 Filipinos aging six to 24-year-old were uneducated and about 24 million of our countrymen were not able to go to school.

Joemell Lorayna, a Grade 6 student from Donsol, Sorsogon also known as “Dagul” is one of the volunteers of “Balsa-Basa”. Dagul goes with his teachers and friends in teaching uneducated kids.

The young educator goes to the house of his teacher to cook their lunch as every volunteer was bringing their own packed lunch. They were also sharing rice and dish before taking the books from school, which will be used in teaching the out-of-school children.

The volunteers don’t mind the slippery path to the river and enduring the hardships just to help the uneducated kids.

Teacher Ryan said that most of the kids often skip cl(–foul word(s) removed–) due to the distance of the school from their home. He also said that children should not attend class if the weather is not good or whenever there’s a heavy rain.

Dagul also shared that going home was harder for them due to the strong current of the river prompting the kid volunteers to their raft or “Balsa”.

Teacher Ryan was hoping to have a motorized boat and life jackets for the safety of his kid volunteers, unfortunately, he can’t yet afford to buy all those stuff.

After traveling back using the raft, the volunteers will change their clothes to teach children in the mountains who usually skipped school due to the muddy path and bad weather.
