Malacañang Palace Issues Correction Over Possible PCUP Abolition
Malacañang Palace has issued a correction regarding the possible abolition of Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP).
Previously, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque announced that President Rodrigo Duterte will abolish the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor during a news briefing.
After an hour later, the Palace official makes a correction on his previous statement and explained that Duterte will fire all PCUP commissioners instead of abolishing it.
Roque explained that the commissioners set to be dismissed from their post will be replaced by new members but the commission will remain.
“With sincerest regrets I would like to correct the statement I made on the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) during this morning’s press briefing. It is to fire, and not to abolish the Commission,” Roque said quoted by Rappler.
However, the spokesman explained that he can’t give further details and information yet on which PCUP officials will be fired.
PCUP is a commission under the Office of the President tasked to respond to issues on urban poverty including housing, reclamation, and demolition.
The commission is led by former Kabataan representative Terry Ridon with its commissioners Melissa Aradanas, Manuel Serra Jr, Noe Indonto, and Joan Lagunda.
Roque said that the decision of Duterte is a part of his commitment to eliminate the corrupt officials under his administration.
