List Of Coastal Areas In PH Containing Red Tide Toxin Released By BFAR

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has released the list of coastal areas in the country containing red tide toxin.

BFAR in cooperation with Local Government Units (LGU) have conducted a laboratory test and found that shellfish in different coastal areas in the Philippines contains red tide toxin and paralytic shellfish poison.

The agency announced that all types of shellfish, Acetes, or alamang in those areas are not safe for human consumption. However, crabs, fish, shrimp, and squids are safe for consumption but they need to be fresh and washed thoroughly.

Here are the coastal waters contaminated by red tide toxin and paralytic shellfish poison:

• Daram Island
• Cambatutay
• Irong-Irong
• Maqueda and Villareal Bays in Western Samar
• Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar
• Carigara Bay in Leyte
• Honda Bay
• Puerto Princesa City and Inner Malampaya Sound
• Taytay in Palawan
• Coastal waters of Mandaon in Masbate
• Bataan coastal waters (Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay and Samal)
• Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur

The statement was confirmed by Eduardo B. Gongona, Undersecretary for Fisheries, DA/Director, BFAR.
