PDEA Apologizes For Disclosing Drug Suspect’s Alleged HIV Condition
The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) issued a public apology over the disclosure of a drug suspect’s HIV condition.
On Wednesday (November 29, 2017), PDEA Director General Aaron Aquino has apologized to the public for disclosing an alleged Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) condition of one of the arrested drug suspects.
PDEA arrested the 11 drug suspects in a hotel buy-bust operation in Seda Hotel at the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig City last Sunday (November 26, 2017).
The authorities recovered illegal substances including methamphetamine, liquid ecstasy, and gamma-butyrolactone (GBL).
An advocacy group promoting HIV awareness “Red Whistle” calls out PDEA and some members of media for disclosing the health condition of one of the suspected drug personalities.
Aquino immediately issued a public apology regarding his PDEA’s statement, which might violate the suspects’ privacy right.
“PDEA has expressed regret in the inadvertent mention during a recent press conference that one of the suspects, though his identity was withheld, is infected with HIV. We may have gone overboard by violating his right to privacy,” Aquino said.
One of the drug suspects admitted that he is suffering from HIV condition and explained that he was taking those medicines in the bottle as a treatment for his disease, according to the PDEA director.
