Small Tsunamis In New Caledonia, Vanuatu Discovered After Strong Undersea Quake

Small tsunamis have been detected in New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

NEW CALEDONIA – After the powerful magnitude 7 undersea earthquake hit east of New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands in the South Pacific on Monday, small tsunamis have been detected right after.

According to a report from the GMA News, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) based in Hawaii had declared a tsunami warning on coastlines within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter.

Yet, they have later on announced that the danger had passed already.

On Monday, they have initially reported an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 has jolted and hit about 82 kilometers (51 miles) east of New Caledonia at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (six miles).

Accordingly, Wayan Rigault, a communications manager at Hotel Nengone Village on the island of Mare, the landmass to which is closest to the epicenter confessed that it was quite a big one.

Rigault said, “We are a little bit scared, we have had an earthquake last night and today it was quite a big one.”

He even reported that there were no immediate damages but the customers and guests were on alert whenever a formal evacuation would be announced.

PTWC said, “Small tsunamis were detected and waves may have reached up to one metre (three feet) above the high tide level in parts of New Caledonia and smaller in Vanuatu.”

The agency has further stated, “Minor sea level fluctuations…may continue over the next few hours.”

The neighboring of the New Caledonia, the Vanuatu, its national disaster management office already suggested for the people to leave the coastal areas.

As per the source, the authorities from the  Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii stated that tsunami threats were not detected in those countries.

And the civil security of the  New Caledonia does not have any plans and have not made any plans yet to evacuate coastal places right away.
