- The Philippines is one of the founding members of the ASEAN together with Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
- The country has been the acting chairman of the ASEAN for the year 2017, which is the reason why the Philippines was chosen as the host of 31st ASEAN Summit.
In 1987, the ASEAN Summit was held in the Philippines for the very first time and was repeated again in 2006.
The ASEAN chairmanship was being transferred every year to the 10 member countries.
