Rappler Reacts On PCOO Asec. Mocha Uson’s Request To Place News Site Under Her Jurisdiction

Rappler reacts on Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson’s request to place the news site under her office.

PCOO Asec. Esther Margaux “Mocha” Uson has requested her boss PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar to accredit Rappler as “Social Media” under her office and take it out from the Malacañang Press Corps (MPC).

The request of Uson was stating that the local news outlet should fall under the rules of her office because Rappler is an online publication that has no counterpart print or broadcast arm. She emphasized that the news site is technically considered as social media.

However, the news site reacted calling Uson’s request was misinformed and misplaced on 3 counts:

  • Rappler explained that government does not have the power to regulate independent private media company based Article III, Section 4 of the Constitution guaranteeing the freedom of the press.
  • The news site stressed out that the Malacañang Press Corps (MPC) is an independent group, which is not attached to any government agency and not under the control of neither government of PCOO.
  • The social media site also explained that PCOO’s Interim Social Media Practitioner Accreditation only covers individual Filipinos, who are at least 18-year-old of age and with not less than 5, 000 followers. News organizations were not covered anymore by PCOO’s jurisdiction.
