Pinay Carina Dayondon Set To Sail To China Using Ancient Boat “Balangay”

A Filipina adventurer Carina Dayondon was set to sail from Philippine to China using an ancient wooden boat called “Balangay”.

The Philippine adventurer Carina Dayondon has previously conquered Mount Everest and now set to sail from Manila going to Southern China next year using a wooden replica of the ancient wooden boat.

Dayondon was planning to recreate the “Balangay,” the trade and migration voyages used by ancient people before the Spanish colonization in the country during the 1500’s.

The 39-year-old adventurer said that she was proud of being a Filipino and expressed how good our forefathers were for inventing the wooden boat.

“I’m excited because our team will be more inspired realizing how good our forefathers were. We have to let people know we should be proud of being Filipino,”  said by Dayondon quoted by Rappler.

The adventurer was a muscular coast guard officer together with her two colleagues created a history in 2007 for being the first Filipinas to summit Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world.

The vessels are replicate of a “Balangay,” which was first made in 320 AD. The boats were about 18 meters long, 3 meters wide, made of hardwood planks, two rudders, two sails, and a roofed area.

The Filipino’s journey to Quanzhou in China will be about 1, 000 kilometers and the crews are aiming to finish the vessel to use as little modern technical help as possible.

The Pinay Everest conqueror also admitted that the life aboard the voyage is a struggle for having no quarters, no toilet in the boat. She also said that the third boat with motor might accompany them if they will be allowed to enter Chinese ports.

Their journey was set to commemorate a journey of a Sultan from the southern island of Sulu who went to China 600 years ago, but died of an illness while sailing back to the country.
