The National Day of Protest is only one of the 5 special holidays declared by the Malacañang Palace for the month of September. The specific dates of September 18, 20, 21, 27, and 29 was declared as a holiday.
September 21, 2017, was the 45th anniversary of Martial Law, which was declared by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos on the same date in 1972. The martial ruling has been considered as the darkest time of some Filipinos after suffering from the abusive members of the military.
However, President Rodrigo Duterte clarifies that he will not declare September 21 as a holiday instead, it will be a day of protest. He also announced the suspension of work and cl(–foul word(s) removed–) in public schools.
The president also encourages and allows the activists to get out and conduct a protest on the 45th anniversary of martial law.
