Magnitude 8 Earthquake Hits Chiapas, Mexico, Tsunami Alert Has Been Raised
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced that a magnitude 8 earthquake has struck the coast of Chiapas, Mexico.
On Friday (September 08, 2017 – PH Time), the coastal area of Chiapas, Mexico has been struck by a magnitude 8.0 earthquake, according to the data of USGS reported by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
PTWC said that the powerful tremor has a depth of 33 kilometers, which shook the capital of Mexico prompting people to leave the buildings and establishment. There are some reports that the electricity in the area has been cut off due to the quake.
Tsunami alerts have been also raised in the coastal areas of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador. The possible tsunami waves were expected to be experienced within three hours.
Possible aftershocks were also expected after the powerful tremor, which causes fear and panic to the residents of Mexico.
