Heavier Sanctions And Penalties Awaits For Environmental Violators As Planned By DENR

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was planning to impose heavier penalties for environmental violators.

On Wednesday (August 30, 2017), heavier sanctions and penalties await for the companies or individuals who will violate the environmental law as the environmental department eyes to implement the proposal.

A blueprint (–foul word(s) removed–)sing the value of the ecological damage caused by environmental violators were assigned to the law enforcement agencies. It aims to measure the liabilities of the offenders to determine the amount of fines and sanctions on the violators.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu explained that violations of environmental laws such as improper garbage disposal, illegal logging, wildlife smuggling and poaching, and other offenses are subject to harsher sanctions and penalties.

“It is imperative to impose higher fines for the commission of any violation of the country’s environmental laws if we are to really curb offenses like indiscriminate disposal of garbage, illegal logging, wildlife poaching and smuggling, to name a few,” said by Cimatu quoted by GMA.

Cimatu also said that the present environmental damage from the offenses can’t be fully accounted yet. He also said that they need to develop a mechanism that could determine cost and compensation of the damage.
