AFP Chief Eduardo Año Says No Way Out For Maute Terrorists In Marawi
The Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Eduardo Año said that there is now way out for the Maute terrorists in Marawi City.
On Tuesday (August 29, 2017), the AFP chief explained that the extremist’s members of the Maute Terror Group have no way out of the beleaguered city neither reinforcements have no way to enter the conflict zone.
Año said that the terrorists would die first before they can enter the city, especially now wherein the battle area has been confined to less than 500 square meters which make the situation for the militants more difficult.
The official believes that the leader of the Maute Group such as Abdullah and Omar Maute are still fighting in Marawi City. He also believes that the Abu Sayyaf leader and overall leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Southeast Asia, Isnilon Hapilon remains in the besieged city.
The crisis in Marawi has already reached its 99th day on Tuesday since it was started last May 23, 2017, when the government forces have raided the hideout of Isnilon Hapilon, who asked for reinforcement from the Maute Group.
The extended gun battle in the beleaguered city of Marawi has killed hundreds of people, most of them are militants and displaced thousands of its residents.
The AFP chief also said that the government troops have captured the key positions of the Maute Group.
“Deliberately, nakukuha natin yung mga stronghold nila lalo na yung Grand Islamic Mosque. We are happy to say na-preserve natin na hindi ito binomba,” said by Año quoted by Inquirer.
He was also expecting a confrontation with the Maute Group as they do their last step.
