“Big One” Might Also Strike Other Parts Of Philippines, DOST Says

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) warned that the “Big One” earthquake might also struck other parts of the Philippines.

On Saturday (August 12, 2017), DOST has warned the public that the “Big One earthquake,” which has a magnitude of 7.2 could possiblystrikek different areas outside the Metro Manila and could cause further damage.

However, DOST Undersecretary at PHIVOLCS chief Renato Solidum has clarified the rumors of linking deep-sea creatures to the major earthquake. He also said that the appearance of deep-sea creatures such as oarfish and giant grouper were not signs and indications of impending calamities.

“Kahit po walang mga nakitang lapu-lapu o oarfish o mga sawang lumabas ay posibleng magkaroon ng lindol. Mahirap silang maging senyales ng paparating na lindol dahil hindi naman sila nakatira sa iisang fault lang. At ang mga sawa ay hindi naman maramihang lumalabas,” said by Solidum quoted by GMA.

Solidum also urged not only the residents residing along the West Valley Fault including Metro Manila and its nearby provinces but also all Filipino people to prepare for the impending big one quake.

The Phivolcs chief explained that the magnitude 7.2 earthquake has an Intensity tremor, which will affect the following areas in Metro Manila such as Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and some areas of Rizal.

The DOST Usec. Also said that the residents who will be affected by the Intensity 8 could find difficulties to escape from their houses and building due to the powerful tremor.

The volcanology agency executive also praised the offices and schools in Metro Manila who already conducted earthquake drills, prepared evacuation plan, and other safety measures in case of emergency.

He is also reminding the public to be always prepared and reminded that many people die due to lack of preparation.
