Bill Granting Free Tuition Fee For SUCs Approved By President Duterte
President Rodrigo Duterte has already signed and approved the bill granting free tuition fee in State Universities and Colleges nationwide.
On Friday (August 03, 2017), Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra announced that the president has already approved the bill granting free education for the college students in the country.
Guevarra said that many Filipino people were happy to hear that Mr. Duterte has already signed the bill. The president approved the proposed bill to provide free tertiary education for State Universities and Colleges (SUCs). The bill turns into last Thursday night (August 03, 2017).
“Since many people have been waiting for the president’s action for the very important enrolled bill that was passed by Congress last May entitled Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education, I am pleased to announce that last night, August 3, 2017, the President signed the enrolled bill,” said by Guevarra quoted by Inquirer.
The bill was submitted to the Office of the President on July 05, 2017 after it was passed by Congress last May.
Previously, Duterte’s economic managers including Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno has opposed the bill. He said that if the bill will be implemented the government will spend an estimated amount of P100 billion, which they cannot afford.
However, Mr. Duterte carefully weighed things and think of the bill’s long-term benefits that can outweigh short-term budgetary issues, according to Guevarra.
The deputy secretary said that the Congress was expected make appropriate actions to fund the long-term project of the president. He also said that the Congress should carefully of how they will reallocate resources to fund the program.
