Stricter Security For SONA Set By The Authorities After Communist Attacks

The authorities have set stricter security for the second State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Duterte after communist attacks.

On Sunday (July 23, 2017), National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said that both police and military have set stricter security measures for the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday (July 24, 2017).

The authorities have tightened the security to prevent any unwanted incidents during the speech of the president after the communist rebels imposed strings of attacks.

NCRPO Director Oscar Albayalde said that the authorities have also instructed the group of protesters that were set to rally during the Duterte’s second SONA. He also urged the police and military to be more watchful to prevent any incident.

Albayalde said that the protesters were only allowed at the corner of Batasan and Sinagtala roads, about 900 meters the venue of SONA. He also said they have not received any threat to the SONA, according to their intelligence units who were in charge of security for the Monday event

“Alam naman po natin ngayon na nagkaproblema sa peace talks at may problema tayo sa CPP-NPA-NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front) kaya kailangan po talagang mahigpit ang pagbabantay natin sa kanilang hanay,” said by    Albayalde quoted by ABS-CBN.

The NCRPO chief that around 6, 300 police officers and 300 soldiers will be deployed to secure the SONA after Mr. Duterte has abandoned the peace talk with the rebels after they have attacked several state troops in some provinces.

Over 27, 000 staunch supporters of President Duterte are expected to be gathered in front of the Civil Service Commission, 1.2 kilometers away from the anti-Duterte activists. The police will deal with the protesters without any weapon such as batons, firearms, and shields.
