The Singaporean beauty pageant contestants have reacted over the “Ugly” and “Not pretty enough” comments from the netizens.

The 19 finalists of Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant 2017 have already received criticisms from some netizens and even questioning if they really look Singaporeans. ERM Singapore Marketing, pageant’s organizer said that not all of the beauty candidates are Singaporeans.

The finalists have also expressed their sentiments and disappointments regarding the criticism about their looks and nationality.

“As long as they are Singaporeans or residents, they are allowed to join the competition. So I don’t see why they can’t represent Singapore,” said by beauty candidate Nur Amelina, 21-year-old.

“A lot of us (PRs) have been here for a really long time and we love this country. We are proud to represent Singapore,” said by finalist Honey Tian, 25-year-old.

The beauty contests will yield four winners under different titles such as Miss Singapore Global Beauty Queen, Miss Grand Singapore, Miss Singapore Tourism Queen, and Miss Singapore Chinatown.

Some social media users were questioning the legitimacy of the event, but the organizer explained that the pageant has been already running for 29 years and winners represent Singapore worldwide.

The photo of the beauty candidates is now circulating in the social media and being criticized by some netizens. The organizer explained that the photos were taken before finalist’s makeovers.

The contestants for the beauty pageant were chosen by a committee consisting of former pageant winners. Numerous contestants have also faced criticism too.

The 28-year-old Ms. Shi Lim said that she has been repeatedly called too fat and too short for the pageant, which she won in 2013. The 24-year-old Tricia Koh said that she was affected by the online cruelty.
