Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake In Leyte Province Aftermath

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the province of Leyte on Thursday (July 07, 2017), which causes severe damage in the province and left the residents trembling in fear.

The powerful earthquake that struck the province of Leyte took the lives of at least two persons and injured numerous people in the area. The tremor hit the area around 04:03 pm with an epicenter of 11.11 North, 124.84 of East, and 44 West of Tacloban and its depth has a total measure of 50 kilometers.

On Thursday night, the quake intensity was raised to 7 after it was felt in the town of Kananga and Ormoc, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). It caused cracks in some building and road infrastructures.

The devastating quake damaged a three-story building, which injured a lot of people inside the establishment but killed at least two people. The rescue team also immediately responded to the incident.

The New Town General Merchandise building near the Kananga Municipal Hall was slightly damaged by the quake. The aftershocks continued to shake the area raising the concern of the citizens in the province.

Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary and Phivolcs officer-in-charge Renato Solidum dismissed the possibility of a tsunami. However, he explained that the volcanology was expecting further damage due to aftershocks.

Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez said that more than 100 people got injured in the incident. The patients of Ormoc Doctor’s Hospital evacuated and rushed into the sidewalk to prevent injuries and casualties.

Mayor Gomez also said that an 18-year-old died when a landslide hit her home in an upland barangay, but her 5-month-baby was able to survive. He also released an order suspending the class in all levels in Ormoc.
