The truth behind the deafening Tuesday and the real happening in Marawi City upon President Duterte’s declaration of Martial Law have been revealed.

On Tuesday (May 23, 2017), the combined forces of the government including Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Eduardo Año, 1st Infantry Division spokesperson Col. Jo-ar Herrera raided a house in Marawi suspected when Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon was hiding.

The forces of Hapilon fought back and asked for reinforcement from a Maute Group, which is probably related to the Islamic State. Around 50 gunmen fought back against the government forces.

The Maute Group who fought back the government troops together with Hapilon was believed to be responsible for the Davao blast last year.

The exchange of gunshots turns into a chaotic scene between the government forces and the Maute Group occupying several establishments such as government hospitals, city jail, city hall, and the Mindanao State University campus.

The firefight affects the parts of the city including church, school, and the electricity supply was cut off. A policeman and 2 soldiers died in the sporadic shootout and at least 12 government troops were injured.

President Rodrigo Duterte declares martial law in all areas of Mindanao for 60 days effective on Tuesday evening at exactly 10 pm. The extended firefight in the city prompted the president cut short his official visit to Russia.

Mr. Duterte is expected to arrive in Manila around 5 pm on Wednesday afternoon (May 24, 2017).
