International Lawmakers To Personally Check The Case Of Senator De Lima

International lawmakers from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) visited Manila to personally check the case of Senator Leila De Lima.

On Monday (May 22, 2017), the members of IPU, a worldwide organization of lawmakers led by its president Fawzi Koofi of Afghanistan have arrived in Manila and visited Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III.

Koofie said in a statement that they flew to the Philippines to check Senator Leila De Lima’s situation on her detention. The foreign lawmakers have been invited by Pimentel to visit the Philippine Senate last month during the IPU Assembly.

The organization has also expressed their deep concern over the human rights violation of Senator De Lima. The senator was accused involved in the proliferation of illegal drugs inside and outside of New Bilibid Prison (NBP).

“The IPU, as a body, expressed concern [over] human rights violation of a member of the Senate in the Philippines, which is Senator Leila de Lima, that’s why the assembly decided to have a mission to the Philippines,” said by Koofi quoted by Rappler.

On Tuesday (May 23, 2017), the members of IPU committee will meet Senate Majority Vicente Sotto III, Senator Panfilo Lacson, and other government officials. On Wednesday (May 24, 2017), the foreign lawmakers will visit De Lima’s detention center at Camp Crame.

Pimentel that the IPU members visited the Philippines for a fact-finding mission about the case of De Lima regarding her alleged involvement in illegal drug trafficking.

IPU also said that the senator has been very vocal on condemning the anti-illegal drug campaign of President Rodrigo Duterte amid the alleged Extrajudicial Killing (EJK), which already reached thousands of killings since he took office in June 2016.
