Anti-Distracted Driving Law Will Ban Mobile Gadgets Placed At Car Windshields Starting May 18, 2017

Mobile gadgets placed on the car windshields that could distract driver’s focus will be banned starting May 18, 2017, and will face corresponding sanctions.

Starting Thursday (May 18, 2017), motorists will be prohibited to display their gadgets including mobile phones at the vehicle’s windshield to avoid direct distraction from the driver’s sight. Violators will face corresponding charges if caught.

The bill is called “The Anti-Distracted Driving Law” that will charge violators a penalty fee of P20, 000 and revocation of their driver’s license. Using mobile phones for texting and making calls while driving is also prohibited.

Violation tickets will be also issued by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to the drivers who will be caught texting or making calls even if the red lights is on. The bill only exempts drivers who were reporting accidents and other emergency cases.

All types of public utility vehicles, government vehicles, private cars, motorcycles, skateboards, bikes, kuliglig, habal-habal, motorized wheel chairs, and even horses were covered by the Anti-Distracted Driving Law.

The rules and regulations on the Anti-Distracted Driving Law are now being drafted to help MMDA on apprehending violators.

Also on Friday (May 19, 2017), the Act providing for the Safety of Children aboard Motorcycles or Republic Act 10666 will be implemented. Violators will be facing 1-year imprisonments, revocation of license, and will be charged a fine of P3, 000 to P10, 000.

Traffic enforcers are not allowed to receive the payment from the motorist instead, violators will pay their fines to Metrobank or Bayad Centers. Barangay officials and tanods will be also summoned to help MMDA to implement the new traffic regulations.
