Senator Riza Hontiveros slammed fellow Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III over his “na-ano lang” remark on single parents.
In a text message she sent to Inquirer.net, the incumbent senator admitted that she was offended on the controversial remark of the actor/politician.
“There’s nothing “na-ano” or shameful about being a solo mother. Am a proud solo mom myself. We make many decisions inside (and) outside the home, (and) we take responsibility for them,” Riza Hontiveros said.
“I am offended. The remarks should be taken seriously because we solo mothers take our parenting & our work outside the home very seriously,” she noted in a separate text message to the press.
Tito Sotto gained the public’s ire as he raised the status of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Judy Taguiwalo during her confirmation hearing before the Commission on Appointments on Wednesday.
He twitted the latter for having two daughters out-of-wedlock.
“In the street language, when you have children and you are single, ang tawag lang ay na-ano lang.”
Tito Sotto then apologized for his remark which offended not just the social welfare secretary but the solo parents in general.
But despite his apology, Risa Hontiveros, who’s a member of Senate opposition committee was not convinced by the latter’s rectification.
“His apology was mixed, that we didn’t ‘get the joke.’ But being a solo mom is no joke at all. We take our child rearing (and) our work outside the home very seriously,” Hontiveros said.
